Enterprise messaging systems enable organizations to exchange data between heterogeneous computer architectures. They function like a trucking depot, where cargo is delivered by producer applications and later picked up by consumer applications, often re-packaged into smaller bundles for distribution. Such systems rely on “message queues” (the depot), a variety of protocols (the carriers) and data formats (the packaging).

These systems rely on message-oriented middleware (MOM), electronic data interchange (EDI), and emerging SOAP and Web Services, and raise special challenges for performance testing. They impose specialized requirements on testing tools to support various protocols, update key fields in message headers for proper routing, and tracking the time it takes for messages to complete a “round-trip”. Such environments are also very dynamic, increasing the overhead of maintaining test scripts.

One of the MOM architectures – arguably the de facto standard in insurance and financial services – is IBM’s WebSphere MQ and its MQ Message Broker. Using HP LoadRunner and its unique MQ protocol as a foundation, we have developed the Mentora MQ Accelerator, comprised of a set of scripts to accelerate time-to-testing and virtually eliminate script maintenance. We have also developed a set of scripts to enable wholesale message preparation for harvesting production messages and reusing them in test environments.
