Hyper-V vs. VMware Evolves with New Releases

Editor’s Note:
Both Hypervisors have advantages, yet Mentora recommends VMware unless you are a committed Microsoft shop.

Intel Builds a Private Cloud
Editor’s Note:
Helpful article if you’re considering charging back for computing capacity consumed by business units or departments. A similar self-service environment can be established in a third-party hosting facility.

By using IaaS and PaaS to build a self-service portal for its research and development group, Intel was able to show users what they were consuming and how much it cost the business, without impeding operations.

The Virtual / Cloud Latency Effect: Enterprises Struggle with Long-Distance Data Relationships
Editor’s Note:
Each client application may require a specific mix and configurations of server, storage and networking solutions in order to overcome potential latency introduced by virtual/cloud environments.

One of the larger unknowns about both cloud and virtual technology is how big an impact it will have on existing physical data center infrastructure and the data environments they support. Data Center consolidation has been a major trend in the past few years, pushing data farther away from its owners. Yet people still want to manage data centrally, and they want their data to remain within the data center for use in the cloud and for back-up and archival purposes. As IT decision-makers move further into cloud and virtualization technology, there is a bit of trial and error-based learning going on regarding the correct relationships between server, storage and networking.
